Estate Administration
When a person dies
an estate must usually be administered. An exception would be if the decedent
did not own any real or personal property when he or she died. Estate administration
involves collecting all of the assets of the decedent, paying all of the just
debts of the decedent including estate and inheritance taxes, and seeing that
the decedent's wishes are carried out with respect to the distribution of any
remaining assets. An estate is administered by a "personal representative"
If there is will, the personal representative named in the will is called the
"executor." If there is no will, that person is referred to as the"
administrator" who is appointed by the Register of Wills and is usually a
close family member.
The personal representative
usually works with an attorney in complying with necessary legal requirements.
